Marc Chagall Biography
Marc Chagall was a Russian born artist who is not all that well known to most people but if you love art and art history then you have heard of him. Some of his most well known works are, “ The Village” and “ The Rabbi of Vitebsk”http://www.moma.org/collection/browse_results.php?object_id=78984
He was mostly an artist who painted and worked on Staining glass windows.
March Chagall was born Moshe Shagal and was born in the village of Vitebsk Russia on July,7,1887.
In 1907 he would move to St Petersburg Russia to study under L.N Bakst. In 1910, he moved to Paris witch was at the time a more modern city witch made a lot of great artists. Many artist’s
Had lived else were but moved to Paris because that was the place to get discovered some artist’s who made their name there were Van Gough and Picasso.
Paris was were Chagall began experimenting with many aspects of Cubism witch is a form of art that grew popular during the early twentieth century. Cubism was famous for painters such as Pablo Picasso who is considered a pioneer in the art. Cubism is painted with subjects blended together were each subject has nothing to do with the other.
Chagall is considered the forerunner of surrealism a form of art made famous by famous artist Salvador Dali.
A few years later, a proclamation was made by the Russians who were led by the Bolshevik revolution wereJews were considered citizens as equals to the rest of Russia so Chagall went there. But in 1922 The attitude of most Russians in high office had changed now expressing distain for the Jews who were now considered subservient to non jewish Russians, So Chagall decided to move back to Paris.
Chagall also spent a lot of his time in New York in the U.S.A and traveled back and forth between there and Paris and continued this throughout his life time.
A lot of Chagall’s works depicted scenes of Jewish life and folk lor but was also fond of flower and animal symbols. In his early years he painted murals of the Jewish state theater and designed sets and costumesfor Stravinsky’s ballet “ Fire bird”. Chagall also created twelve murals symbolizing the tribes of Israel and were exhibited in both Paris and New York City. In 1962, They were installed in Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center synagogue in Jerusalem.
Many of his most fantastic works were illustrated in books including Gogol’s Dead Souls, La Fontaine’s Fables and illustrations for the Bible. A museum of his work opened in Nice in 1973. His name is also spelled Shagall. He lived a decent life compared to many other famous artists such as Van Gough who shot himself in the chest and died pennieless.
On March,28,1985 Chagall died leaving behind the art that was pioneered by him to continue being replicated by other artists.
